During this special time of year, December to Early April, Humpback Whales come to mate and give birth in the calm waters of Kona. There is no better way to see them than with Kona’s year round marine mammal excursion experts aboard the custom 46ft power catamaran “Makai”.

Board the Makai for a 3-hour journey of discovery and adventure. Relax on the upper deck or the main deck in fully shaded comfort as you cruise the scenic Kona Coast. Shore spotters will guide the Makai to the best Whale viewing areas, their naturalist and crew will entertain you with historical facts and information on the many points of interest along the way and the animals encountered. Have your camera ready for your first whale encounter as you watch these amazing animals up close. Some of the activities you may see are breeching, spy hopping, pectoral fin slapping, tail slapping, mating behavior and mothers caring for their young. Listen to the whale songs produced by these majestic mammals through their underwater hydrophone.

Be sure to watch for the local spinner dolphins that are regular companions on most of our trips.

Vessel Description:
MV Makai is a 46ft long, fully shaded, two-deck power catamaran US Coast Guard Certified to handle 98 passengers. Completely refurbished in 2009 it features his and hers restrooms, fresh water shower, custom bar, plush upper lounge deck, lower wet deck for water activities, large swim ladder for easy water entry and exit, shaded decks for sun protection and open concept for 360 viewing. Blue Sea Cruises Inc. operates the most ECO friendly boats on the Big Island.
